HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Boys
Julius Loughridge, Mayde Creek
Notable: Among the Chronicle’s Top 100 football recruits for 2021, Loughridge scored all five touchdowns for Mayde Creek (2-0) in a 35-7 win over Cypress Lakes, running for 255 yards on 30 carries. Loughridge’s longest run was for 35 yards, and he scored on runs of 6, 11,1, 19 and 9 yards.
What coach Brian Randle said: “Julius is an outstanding human being, first and foremost. He’s a great football player, but the quality person that he is is what I’m really impressed with. He’s the type of kid that you’ll let him watch your kids. He’s that high character kid and a workhorse.”
Other nominees
Cameron Gray, Dobie: Dobie (2-0) blitzed St. Thomas 42-14, with Gray completing 15 of 23 passes for 283 yards and two touchdowns. He also had eight carries for 73 yards. One of Gray’s touchdown passes went for 99 yards.
Tyler Prazak, Legacy Prep: The junior completed 15 of 21 passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-6 win over Frassati Catholic, He also ran for 97 yards and a TD.
Barreon Shuler, Sam
Houston: Shuler had two interceptions against Fulshear, taking one back for an 80-yard touchdown.
Girls
Briana Zamora, Clear Creek
Notable: In District 24-6A wins over Brazoswood, Dickinson and Clear Brook, the junior libero collected 11 aces and 59 digs with a 2.42 passer rating in serve receive. Clear Creek only dropped one set in the three wins.

Simonds said: “Bri is one of the hardest working kids I’ve ever coached. She’s one of our captains, a third-year varsity starter for us, a great server, passer and amazing defensive player. She’s also ridiculously smart and ranked in the top 10 students in her junior class.”
Other nominees
Alyssa May, Magnolia West: She collected double-doubles in wins over Bryan Rudder (15 kills and 10 digs) and College Station (20 kills and 15 digs).
Julia Newman, Episcopal: The freshman won the Grand Oaks cross country invitational with a time of 20 minutes, 20 seconds over the 5,000meter course. It’s her second win of the season.
Kingsley Wallace, Memorial: In a sweep of Jersey Village, Wallace tallied 12 kills on a .333 hitting percentage and 44.4 kill percentage. Memorial has won its last five.
