Acall for healing and unity

A Christian’s case for Biden

Regarding “We recommend Joe Biden for president” (Oct. 11): I’ve been a Reagan conservative since high school. I voted for Donald Trump because the alternative was Hillary Clinton. I’ve never voted for a Democrat for president. But this cycle, my Christian faith is talking to me. Back in 2016, I didn’t like “those people.” I was upset by Muslims who were going to destroy everything Christian. I was convinced that my faith could overcome if it were more nationalistic — more tribalistic. I was putting America first.

During the Trump administration, I have seen my religion use fear to stoke an us-vs.-them mentality that Jesus would have despised. Jesus loved the marginalized, the poor, the addict, the refugee, the mentally ill and the prisoner. Jesus was pro-life, from the womb to the tomb. When Trump made fun of Joe Biden’s son for being addicted to drugs, it stirred up all kinds of righteous anger inside of me. The real turning point came when the National Guard pepper sprayed a peaceful protest for a photo op where he held a Bible in front of a church that he does not attend. It was a total sham. In Trump, I do not see remorse or repentance. What is the Christian faith without humility? This country needs to heal and unite. Of the two candidates, which is more likely to do this? I’m not a socialist. I’m trusting our democracy and our system of checks and balances. I am trusting in Christ.
