AUSTIN — Texas lost a commitment from five-star Southlake Carroll recruit Quinn Ewers, the No. 1prospect in the class of 2022, per 247Sports rankings.

Ewers, the 2019 MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year, pledged to Texas in August.

“Recently, as I’ve competed alongside my teammates during my junior season at Southlake Carroll, I’ve also taken some time to think aboutmy future,” Ewers tweeted Wednesday night. “Given the COVID-19 pandemic facing us, this has been a challenging year for all students like myself. With the support of my family, I tried to navigate the recruiting process the best way I could. With the process being abnormal this season, I tried my best to keep an open mind to all possibilities.

“However, the more I’ve considered, the more I’ve come to realize I didn’t explore all options as thoroughly as I would have liked. Therefore, I’ve decided to de-commit and reassess the situation before making such an important decision on my future”

To say losing Ewers is deflating would be an understatement. The 6-3, 195pound pro-style quarterback would have been the heart of the Longhorns’ 2022 class and would have played an active role in luring other notable prospects to Austin.

Texas’ 2022 class took another blow Thursday night when four-star receiver Phaizon Wilson withdrew his pledge to the Longhorns. The 6-4, 210pound prospect from Lancaster High School became Texas’ first commitment in the 2022 cycle back on July 31. Wilson holds 16 offers. He ranks as the 25th best wide receiver in the 2022 class.

A lack of on-field improvement coupled with a growing disconnect between players and fans seemingly caused Ewers to reconsider aligning with Texas and coach Tom Herman.

Ewers said he would “soon have a firm decision on where I will spend the next few formative years of my life and career, and I look forward to sharing that with you.” Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson and a slew of others will now battle it out to earn his pledge.

“Iwould like to thank the University of Texas for their belief in me and my abilities,” Ewers tweeted. “I understand this year has been challenging for the coaches and administrators as well, so I appreciate their understanding and wish them the best in the future.”
