Brisketgate: Get over it
Regarding “Grieder: Let’s let Sen. Cornyn enjoy his ‘traditional’ brisket in peace,” (Dec. 30): I have been busy with grandkids and missed the brouhaha over Sen. John Cornyn’s Christmas Eve dinner. Many years ago, a recipe for Picante Brisket appeared in the Chronicle’s very own food section. It is delicious, not tomention easy to prepare; the perfect dish for a busy holiday time. I ama 75-year-old native Houstonianwho has eaten her share of brisket, both good and bad. Brisket is a cut of meat, not amethod of preparation. Get over it!

Travis draws fire
Regarding “Houston councilmember under fire for offensive Facebook posts about Obama, Harris, Clinton,” (Dec. 29): Councilman Greg Travis’ work formy community has brought usmany benefits and I amappreciative of his efforts. He is entitled to his opinion, as hewell knows. He is also a smart man and it is disappointing for himto use ameme that denigrates multiple people in order for him to be able to state his opinion. Is he the councilmember who has earnedmy appreciation and respect? Or is he a petty person that cannot find a way to express his opinionwithout belittling others?

I urge the mayor and city council to step
up and censure Greg Travis as they did Councilman JimWestmoreland for his racial slur against Mickey Leland in 1989. I remember the incident. Council did the right thing then and they should do it now. Houston deserves better than this.
Sammye Larson, Houston
As an attorney, Councilman Greg Travis should know how difficult it is not only to gain acceptance into Harvard Law School but also tomake the grade while there. Comments like his negate all the hard work it takes for someone like Michelle Obama to become a successful attorney, trained by the best law school in America. As a Hispanic graduate of the University of Texas law school, I knowhowhard a journey it is for a person of color without the resources that come with privilege to attain a degree from a prestigious school. I know it wasn’t family connections, expensive private schools or private tutoring that got me through law school, but good grades, hard work and determination. I demand a public apology and a commitment fromhim to attend sensitivity training.
