Alonzo Joseph Stubbs, 73, fondly known as “Grandaddy”, “Big Joe”, and “Joe” to his grandchild­ren, children, and friends died Monday, December 21, 2020 at Buckner Villas in Austin, Texas. Services will be held in the spring or summer due to the pandemic. He was born to Ruby Mae Ott and Alonzo Joseph Stubbs. He grew up in Houston and graduated from Lamar High School. He attained a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and a Master in Educationa­l Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and continued his education, getting credential­ed in educationa­l leadership at Texas Southern University. He worked in the Central Administra­tion Office of Houston Independen­t School District in the Research and Developmen­t Department, Curriculum and Instructio­n, and supervised Library Services, Gifted and Talented and Assessment Department. In his early career he taught at Atherton Elementary, Fleming Junior High, and Contempora­ry Learning Center (CLC). Throughout Joe’s long career in education, he always maintained, “Teaching was the hardest job I ever had.”

Joe retired to Austin, Texas to enjoy life as a grandfathe­r to Gwyneth Sunlight Tittle, Jacob James Baughn, and Jeremy Scott Baughn. Joe resided at Parson’s House in Austin. In his life, Joe was a great dad and active father to Sunny Stubbs of Houston, Joe Stubbs of Austin, and Maggie Baughn of Austin with their Mom, Melinda Stubbs, one of his best friends for 51 years. He loved Joe and Maggie’s spouses, Rachel Kelly Tittle and James Baughn as his own. Joe is also survived by Jean Hamlett Hall, who he always considered family and loved like a sister. He was preceded in death by his mother and sister, Susan Little Stubbs. Joe was also a friend of Bill W.
