Mob attacks U.S. Capitol
Regarding “Texans react to chaos in the nation’s Capitol,” ( Jan. 6): Today’s events have exposed the Donald Trump wing of the GOP as simply seditionists with no respect for law or the Constitution, and our own junior Sen. Ted Cruz has given them full-throated encouragement and support. He has brought shame on this state and the office that he holds. We missed our chance to remove this pretender last time he ran — I hope everyone remembers his actions when he runs again.

Thanks to our own junior senator, we now have an exemplary example of “treason.”
John Turnquist, Houston
The city and the country are counting on the Houston Chronicle to condemn the madness in the Capitol in the strongest possible way — front page like Pearl Harbor or 9/11. We are under attack by a highly aggressive, minority sector of society.
Three African American men peacefully standing on a street corner on Dowling Street would bring down more repression than these thousands of subversives who have invaded the floor and offices of the House and the Senate.
How, though, do we, as a democratic people, reconcile the level of violence brought down on legal protestors peacefully demonstrating per the Constitution when the occupant of the White House decided that he wanted to walk to St. John’s Church for his own egomaniacal purposes and how this overwhelmingly white mob has been treated?
One of many necessary responses would be the most powerful chorus possible of newspaper editors and publishers in a full-throated and continuing condemnation of this attack on the people of the United States.
You probably know what to do. Please do it!
And along the way, please highlight the lying treachery of the junior senator from Texas.
Art Sadin, Houston
We have been attacked, not from without — but from within. God help us.
Peg Sauter, Houston
Today we saw a terrorist invasion of our U.S. Capitol by a fascist-inspired crowd. Donald Trump instigated and fomented this. His actions are nothing short of treason. But he is not the only one. Sen. Ted Cruz is an accomplice. His baseless game of “objecting” to the electoral count. which is nothing more than a charade to get the backing of Trump supporters in 2024, is guilty of promoting Trump’s baseless accusations and the crowd response is no surprise. Cruz is guilty of sedition. Guilty of insurrection. Guilty of violating the Constitution. Shameful. Shameful. Anyone interested in a recall election?
Frank Mott, Houston
Once again Congress is sitting on their hands. It seems that there is not a single member of Congress with an ounce of courage. They all have oaths of office to fulfill. Their lives are not more valuable then the rule of law. Their lives are not more valuable than the Constitution. The only reason they failed to continue the vote to confirm President Biden is cowardice. Any questions as to voter fraud will be answered by the courts. There is no question that Biden is the next president of these United States. If Congress continues to abet President Trump in his effort to overthrow the government of the United States, they are as guilty as this president is for all the violence and damage that is to come.

In the name of all things we hold sacred in the country, Sen. Ted Cruz should let democracy unfold and stop objecting to the peaceful transfer of power. His behavior has been an embarrassment to me, as a Texan, for sure. But in light of the horrifying violence in Washington, D.C. today, how can he stand up and continue these objections? It’s despicable. Sen. Cruz, I implore you to do the right thing. Losing an election doesn’t allow President Trump to break our country. Shame on you for supporting him. Show us now you know the difference between right and wrong.
