Watson unhappy
Quarterback wanted to have input in hiring process.
Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson is upset with the organization because he wanted to have a voice in the team’s hiring process.
Watson met late in the season with chairman and chief operating officer Cal McNair and expressed his wishes to be involved, according to multiple league sources not authorized to speak publicly. The conversations ledWatson to believe that he would have input, only to be left out in the decision to hire Nick Caserio as generalmanager. Watson isn’t upset with the choice ofCaserio, but sources emphasized that Watson simply wanted to give his opinion on job candidates and wasn’t told the teamwas hiring Caserio before an agreement in principle was reached Tuesday night.
Caserio has signed a six-year contractworth $6million annually that includes annual $1 million bonuses and options for a seventh and eighth year, according to sources.
Watson tweeted, “Some things never change” before deleting the post.
Watson has not requested a trade, and the team doesn’t intend to deal one of the most dynamic players in the game, according to sources.
Signed to a four-year, $156 million contact that included $110 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $39 million, Watson’s contract includes a notrade clause, per sources informed of his deal. The team isn’t allowed to trade Watson without his written consent, according to the language in his contract.
Watson was upset when the
Texans traded wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona last offseason.
Without Hopkins while dealing with a suspension to Will Fuller and a season-ending injury to Randall Cobb, Watson still led the NFL in passing yardage this season and threw a career-high 33 touch down passes with just seven interceptions.
