ANSWER: You do not intend to take further action later in the bidding, but you might not have a choice if partner makes a strong move. In that situation, you would like to be able to play in the right strain. Bid one spade so you can mention hearts later and give partner a choice without potentially raising the level. If partner doesn’t have extras, who is to say spades will play worse than hearts?
