UTEP runs by Rice; Purdue rallies to win

Bryson Williams scored 29 points, Jamaal Bienemy contribute­d 24 points and six assists and Keonte Kennedy added 22 points as UTEP defeated Rice 101-89 on Friday night at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso.

Max Fiedler led Rice (8-3) with 22 points and Travis Evee scored 21.

Trevion Williams made a short jumper with 4.5 seconds left and scored 22 of his 26 points after halftime, rallying the Boilermake­rs past the host Spartans after trailing by 17.

Aaron Henry, who scored 13 points, missed a runner from the left side of the lane just before the buzzer to seal the collapse for the Spartans.

Williams made 9 of 14 shots and 8 of 12 free throws to spur the Boilermake­rs (8-5, 3-3 Big Ten).

The Spartans (8-4, 2-4) missed 11 of their last 13 shots.

No. 13 Missouri has paused all men’s basketball activities as a result of COVID-19 protocols and postponed Saturday night’s home game against LSU.

The Tigers (7-1) did not disclose any details and said the status of the Jan. 12 game against Vanderbilt and the Jan. 16 game at Texas A&M will be determined at a later date.

No. 19 Clemson paused team activities due to a positive COVID-19 test result, leading to the postponeme­nt of the Tigers’ games at North Carolina on Saturday and Syracuse on Tuesday.

George Washington will not visit St. Bonaventur­e for Saturday’s game be

cause of a positive COVID-19 test by a staff member in the team’s traveling party.

Georgia State postponed games against Troy on Friday and Saturday and paused all team activities following multiple positive COVID-19 tests.

The game between host UConn and Villanova, scheduled for Jan. 15, has been postponed.

Women RICE 74, UTEP 68

The Owls had four players in double figures in scoring, led by a gamehigh 16 points from sophomore Lauren Schwartz, to defeat the Miners at Tudor Fieldhouse.

Rice (7-1, 3-0) won their 19th consecutiv­e Conference USA home game (14th straight overall) by shooting 50 percent from the field, the Owls’ fourth game this season at that mark or higher.

Schwartz made 6-of-11 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and led the team with five assists. Center Nancy Mulkey added 15 points while guard Jasmine Smith (13

points) and Haylee Swayze (12 points) also scored in double-figures.

Haley Jones had 18 points and six rebounds, and the Cardinal used an explosive third quarter to beat the Ducks at Santa Cruz, Calif.

Francesca Belibi’s three-point play with 17 seconds remaining in the third capped a second decisive 9-0 run by the Cardinal (10-0, 7-0 Pac-12).

Oregon (8-2, 6-2) lost again after it fell out of the top-10 with a home defeat to UCLA.

The Atlantic Coast Conference says Virginia’s game Tuesday against Wake Forest has been postponed.

Memphis’ game against Wichita State scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues in the Shockers program.

Washington has postponed games scheduled at No. 9 UCLA on Jan. 15 and Southern California on Jan. 17.
