At the end of every year, our Looped In real estate podcast celebrates by looking back on the best and worst of Houston real estate: the Loopies.

There was a lot to choose from in 2020

With the need to socially distance, the pandemic has shaped the way we interact, which has affected the spaces we interact in. Home sales and renovations boomed, offices were thrown into uncertainty and hotels and small retailers floundered. Some have closed for good.

Amid unprecedented uncertainty that forced many to work from home, drove those who could to seek de-densification and sparked panic buying of everything from toilet paper to rye wheat flour, there was no shortage of options for the year’s buzziest real estate buzzword.

And as the Daugherty-Elliman merger dissolved into lawsuits, workplaces grappled with their views on masks and the National Association of Realtors tackled racist social media posts, there were plenty of controversies as well.

There were also glimmers of hope, including one that drove home sales, reduced the monthly costs of homeowners, gave home values room to grow even during the pandemic and reportedly allowed some loan officers to bring home more than $1 million.
