Here are some of the new films being released in theaters or for streaming, rental or purchase this week.

“Acasa, My Home”

Documentar­y focusing on a family in a forested part of Romania who are forced off where they’ve been living and have to fend for themselves in Bucharest. The film has won several awards at global film festivals. Unrated. Begins streaming Jan. 15 at mfah.org/movienight.

“Alludu Adhurs”

Telugu-language Indian film about a young man who falls for a girl and then is possessed by a ghost.

Unrated. Opens Jan. 15 at Cut! By Cinemark, Cypress.

“The Dig”

World War II-era drama about a woman (Carey Mulligan) who allows an archaeolog­ist (Ralph Fiennes) to excavate the burial mounds on her property. Rated PG-13. Opens Jan. 15 at Landmark River Oaks, Houston; begins streaming Jan. 29 on Netflix.

“Double Dad”

Brazilian comedic drama set on a hippie commune where a girl sets off to find her father. Unrated. Begins streaming Jan. 15 on Netflix.

“Dr. Bird’s Advice for Sad Poets”

Jason Isaacs, David Arquette and Tom Wilkinson star in this fantasy-tinged drama about a teen who tries to overcome depression and anxiety by seeking advice from an imaginary pigeon therapist.

“Flinch”

A young hitman develops feelings for the witness of the murder he commits. Unrated. Opens Jan. 15 at Studio Movie Grill Pearland.

“Horizon Line”

Allison Williams, Alexander Dreymon and Keith David star in a thriller in which a couple on a small plane have to fight for survival after the pilot has a heart attack.

Rated PG-13. Streaming on various platforms.

“Hunted”

A woman meets a seemingly nice guy at a bar. In this horrorthri­ller starring Lucie Debay, the emphasis is on “seemingly.” It’s the first English-language film from Vincent Paronnaud, who co-directed “Persepolis.” Unrated. Begins streaming Jan. 14 on Shudder.

“The Marksman”

Liam Neeson brings his very particular set of skills to this role as a rancher on the Arizona border who suddenly finds himself the protector of a young boy on the run from a cartel. Rated PG-13. Opens Jan. 15 throughout Houston.

“Master”

It’s teacher vs. crime boss in this Indian film about an alcoholic professor who goes against a mobster using students for criminal activities. Unrated. Opens Jan. 15 at

“MLK/FBI”

The latest documentar­y from Sam Pollard looks at how the FBI waged is own war against Martin Luther King Jr. Unrated. Opens Jan. 15 at iPic Houston.

“Outside the Wire”

Anthony Mackie plays a cyborg soldier in the near future who is paired with a flesh-and-blood partner to hunt down nuclear codes in the wilds of a civilwar-damaged Eastern Europe before a madman gets them. Rated R. Begins streaming Jan. 15 on Netflix.

“Rock Camp: The Movie”

Alice Cooper, Gene Simmons and Heart’s Nancy Wilson are just some of the big names who appear in this documentar­y about a rock ’n’ roll fantasy camp.

“Tribhanga”

Hindi-language Indian film about the lives of three women from the 1980s to present day. Unrated. Begins streaming Jan. 15 on Netflix.

“The Ultimate Playlist of Noise”

On the heels of “Sound of Metal,” in which a musician goes deaf, comes this film about a high school student who needs brain surgery — a procedure that will render him deaf and unable to listen to music. So he puts together his ultimate playlist. Unrated. Begins streaming Jan. 15 on Hulu.
