Road to vaccines too long

-

Can’t wait until May

Regarding “What you need to know about getting your vaccine,” (A7, Jan. 13): Dear Mayor Sylvester Turner and County Judge Lina Hidalgo: It’s been a long road. I’ve watched you get out among the citizens of Harris County and urge them to distance and wear masks. I’ve watched you work with park visitors and beachgoers; Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrators; and even demonstrators to try and contain the pandemic in Harris County. Now I see you urging others to get their vaccine, and that’s a wonderful thing. You continue to urge citizens to persevere, to stay the course. I ask the same of both of you. We have almost 500,000 people over 65 in Harris County. The Houston area received 26,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine this week. The three hub vaccination registration sites are full through the end of the month. At this rate, it will take through May to vaccinate those over 65. And that does not even include those with serious comorbidities, also in the 1B tier. You can, should and must do better. I urge you to try harder, for the sake of your constituents. I am sending this letter to our governor and senator as well in the expectation that you will work together for Houston and Texas.
