Shark attack

Regarding “Shark populations are sinking worldwide,” (A5, Han. 28): The New York Times reports the world’s shark population is shrinking. Not so. The Times got it wrong. The Democrats are alive and well.

Let Trump fade away

Regarding “Don’t let Trump off,” (A12, Jan. 22): I was holding my breath almost literally from Nov. 3 to Jan. 20, waiting for the long nightmare to end. I know we won’t go back to normal overnight, but I have hope for the first time in four years. Now, voters, you have to give Democrats better than two years to fix what you’ve given Republicans 20 years to break. Keep voting. And Democrats, now that you have all of Congress and the White House, this would be a good time to fix the redistricting mess that makes it so hard to remove an incompetent politician. As for convicting Donald Trump, it looks dodgy at best. And really, if he does go to prison, it’ll be that luxury prison where they sent the Watergate burglars. Five years of golf and playing bridge with like-minded people who keep feeding his ego. I think leaving him alone, ignoring him, leaving him out of the news, out of being the center of attention, letting him fade to obscurity — that’s probably the worst punishment in the world for him.

No more barriers

Regarding “Pandemic adds to Medicaid debate” (A1, Jan. 28): I could not help noticing that the pros and cons were measured in terms of money. It is far past time to frame the Medicaid expansion debate in terms of human decency. For those who follow the Bible, I would cite Matthew 25:31-46, where the writer makes clear that we are to minister to those who are sick. This cannot include keeping barriers, such as no health insurance, between the sick and those caregivers who could help them get well. How many years must those with no health insurance suffer disease until they cannot tolerate it any longer? Must they trek off to some emergency room where it may be too late to save them? John T. James, Austin

Vaccine ethics

Regarding “Stuck in the snow, vaccination team gets to work,” (A6, Jan. 29): Very fortunate those Oregon health workers who made the logical decision to administer the expiring vaccine weren’t employed in the Houston health system. Lewis Homburg, West Columbia
