City dismantles homeless camp under freeway
Scores of people who have been living in tents under Interstate 37 near downtown San Antonio were ousted Wednesday morning as a work crew hired by the city removed their belongings.
Some residents of the camp gathered in small groups and sat along street curbs as they watched their tents put into a long trailer. Dozens of police officers, some on bicycles, had been summoned to the site.
Over the winter, the camp had grown from a few tents to dozens and dozens, stretching for several city blocks — a stark visual reminder of the people without shelter during the pandemic. Last week, city workers counted about 85 people in the camp, but others estimated it was 100.
