AMELIA JANE “JANIE” (GALE) EVANS

January 21, 2021, Amelia Jane Gale Evans, better known to friends as Janie and to her grandchild­ren as JJ, passed away at 72. Janie was known for being strong, resilient, compassion­ate, dedicated, determined, organized and silly. She so loved everyone that she inspired us to be kind to others and kind to ourselves.

Janie was born in San Antonio in 1948. In May 1970, she married Bruce Evans at St. Mark’s Episcopal in San Antonio then a week later graduated from UT Austin with a BS in Elementary Education with highest honors. She taught in Dual Language programs at Emerson then Herod Elementary schools. In 2001, she completed her Master’s in Educationa­l Administra­tion at the University of St. Thomas. Janie became the Assistant Principal of Herod Elementary then moved to be Principal at Longfellow Elementary before retiring.

Janie loved painting, Bible study at St. Martin’s Episcopal and volunteeri­ng at Yellowston­e Academy where she was honored with the Good Neighbor Award for her many years of service. Bruce and Janie regularly invited neighbors to visit political candidates at their home. The family loved going to holiday gatherings at Janie’s because they were full of love, laughter and great food. She took comfort in a deep faith and used this to encourage others.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce Evans, daughter Emily Evans and spouse Daniel Carney, son Andrew Evans and spouse Jessica Evans, grandchild­ren Ella, Drew, Jack, Luke, Ford Evans and Calvin Carney, sister Marita and spouse Steve Spanier, brother Pliny Gale and spouse Mary Etta. Her parents, Pliny Myron Gale, Jr and Doris Remy Gale, precede her in death.

Service: St. Martin’s Episcopal, 717 Sage Rd Friday February 12 at 4pm including livestream. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Yellowston­e Academy, St Martin’s Episcopal Outreach or Cholangioc­arcinoma Foundation.
