I-45 closure slated near Dickinson

Driving to Galveston will take longer this weekend, as crews demolishing a bridge will shut down Interstate 45 between Dickinson and Texas City.

As part of the $230 million rebuild of I-45 from FM 517 to FM 1764, workers plan to tear down the Holland Road bridge spanning the freeway this weekend, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. The bridge will close permanently at noon Friday, and Holland will remain closed for the next two years, as the freeway is widened through the area.

To allow for the demolition, the freeway will close in both directions at 9 p.m. Friday and reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, officials said. During the closing, traffic will detour to the frontage roads, which could lead to delays in both directions.

Scheduled to be completed in 2023, the work south to FM 1764 will add a fourth lane in each direction to I-45 and continuous frontage roads. It is the latest segment of the freeway widening from Houston to Galveston; TxDOT officials’ goal is to make the freeway eight lanes to the island.
