Vaccine stories

Regarding “City plans website to schedule 2nd shots,” (A3, Feb. 2): The Houston Health Department deserves commendations! I was fortunate to receive two Moderna vaccines. The first was at La Nueva Casa de Amigos Health Center and the second was at JW Peavy Senior Center. Both facilities were impeccable with social distancing mandated, and the staffs at both were cordial, professional and extremely efficient. Both Director Stephen Williams and Mayor Sylvester Turner and all the staff members deserve credit for serving the population of the Houston area during this difficult time.

Picnic plans

Regarding “93 Til’s food for thought,” (D1, Feb. 3): As foodies we have enjoyed Alison Cook’s reviews of Houston restaurants for years, but we think she’s missing an aspect in her Curbside Chronicles. While it would be preferable to enjoy these fine meals in the environment where they were designed, alas, due to the pandemic we are aligned with Cook who does only takeout. Since we live in the Clear Lake area and do not want cold takeout when we got home we adapted significantly, we are probably the only people I know that have a “go bag” in our car filled with picnic materials and supplies that include blankets, chairs and portable lanterns (it is winter after all). We have made it an enjoyable game to order takeout from some of our favorite restaurants and then find a previously unknown to us park in the area to go have a picnic. We have found some very enjoyable places that we never knew existed while having wonderful meals. We look forward to dining in again someday but in the meantime we have a new fun way to enjoy Houston’s wonderful restaurants. Cook might like to try a picnic. We can suggest a few spots.

Immigration questions

Regarding “‘ID and Tax’ a better immigration solution,” (A15, Feb. 3): Kudos to Stan Marek for suggesting a workable solution for immigrants. His well thought out opinion raised two major questions in my mind. Why have all those high school internships and programs not resulted in American-born workers? Do they not want these good paying jobs? And just because undocumented immigrants are here, does that mean we should give them a blanket high five and roll out the welcome mat now? That still robs Americans of jobs they should be filling. And, so the argument becomes circular.

I realize undocumented immigrants have left unfortunate circumstances, so why isn’t our government addressing those issues with Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, etc.? That’s where our government could affect real change.
