Iowa regains footing by defeating Rutgers

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Joe Wieskamp scored 26 points and Luka Garza overcame a slow start to score 22 as No. 15 Iowa beat No. 25 Rutgers 79-66 on Wednesday night.

The Hawkeyes (14-6, 8-5 Big Ten), who fell out of the top 10 of the Associated Press poll this week for the first time this season, were coming off a stretch of four losses in the last five games.

Wieskamp, who had 16 points in the first half, added 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.

Garza, the nation’s leading scorer at 25.5 points per game, missed his first five shots and didn’t score until the 8minute mark of the first half. He had just eight points in the first half on 2 of 10 shooting, but was 6 of 10 from the field in the second half.

Geo Baker led Rutgers (11-7, 7-7) with 11 points.

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl scored a season-high 27 points to lead the Wildcats past the visiting Golden Eagles.

Collin Gillespie added 16 points and 11 assists, and Jermaine Samuels scored 14 for Villanova, which has won 10 of 11. Robinson-Earl made 10 of 11 shots, including all five 3-point tries.

Trey Murphy III scored 18 points, Kihei Clark added 14 and the Cavaliers pulled away down the stretch to win at Atlanta.

Jonathan Davis scored 10 points and made a couple big baskets to help the Badgers begin pulling away after halftime as they overcame 32.3 percent shooting in a road victory.

Bryce Monroe had a season-high 26 points as the Bearkats stretched

their home winning streak to 10 games.

Sam Houston is 15-6 overall and tied for the Southland Conference lead at 9-1.

Gavin Kensmil tied his career high with 23 points and had 10 rebounds as the Lumberjack­s extended their home winning streak to 10 games by defeating the Islanders.

Kensmil hit 10 of 12 shots for the Southland Conference tri-leaders (12-3, 9-1).

At Abilene, the Huskies struggled in their return from a two-week hiatus and were no match for a Wildcats team that shares the Southland lead.

Darius Lee led HBU (3-13, 2-6) with 14 points.

Kevin Johnson had 18 points to lead the Colonels to a victory over the Cardinals at Beaumont.

Freshman Paige Bueckers scored 23 points and the Huskies overcame an early 11-point deficit to beat the Pirates at Storrs, Conn.

NaLyssa Smith had 28 points and 13 rebounds as the Bears won at Lubbock

to extend their decadelong winning streak over the Red Raiders to 24 games in a row.

There was a scary moment midway through the third quarter when Baylor guard DiDi Richards, who during preseason practice was left temporaril­y paralyzed after a freak spinal injury, fell hard to the floor. Richards eventually walked to the locker room with assistance before returning to the bench in the fourth quarter.

Coach Kim Mulkey said afterward that Richards had concussion symptoms.

Charli Collier finished with 28 points and 19 rebounds to post her 14th double-double of the season to lead the Longhorns to victory at Austin.

Collier, a junior from Mont Belvieu, also became the 47th player in Texas history to pass the 1,000point mark in her career.

Britney Onyeje scored 19 points and Laila Blair added a career-high 18 as the visiting Cougars rolled to their highest scoring total in an American Athletic Conference game.
