Abortion

-

Regarding “I’m a rabbi, and abortion is a religious right,” (A14, Feb. 10): Rabbi Joshua Fixler concludes his op-ed by writing how important it is for people to share experiences of birth, loss, abortion and infertility. My mother contracted rubella while pregnant during the epidemic of 1964-65. During that same pregnancy, she was broadsided by a heavy truck that ignored a traffic signal. She was extremely concerned for the potential defects this child might have, but none of that mattered. She already loved that child, and that child is me. She had the power to choose whether I would get to live or die. I am so thankful every day that she loved me as much as she loved herself.

Kudos, bravos and high-fives to Rabbi Joshua Fixler for his spot-on op-ed. Twas refreshing to read a religious leader who supports choice when the majority of the anti-choice forces subscribe to their own personal interpretations of religious texts to support their tedious argument. One seldom hears a secular viewpoint in the anti-choice camp. We thank the

Houston Chronicle for having published it.
