Medical students volunteer to help care for homeless
About 15 students at Sam Houston State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine spent Saturday checking the vitals, cholesterol, blood sugar and vision of homeless people at the Salvation Army’s Wayne Bergstrom Center of Hope.
“It has definitely been eye-opening, but it’s really great to have the experience to offer this to one of the vulnerable communities in Conroe,” said firstyear medical student Alwyn Mathew. “What we have seen most has been transportation issues and housing issues. A lot of these members of the community stay here, especially because it is cold, but then … they have no resources to go to the clinic.”
