Van Paris wins AJGA boys title
In becoming the first two-time winner of the AJGA Simplify Boys Championship at The Woodlands, Jackson Van Paris overcame unfavorable weather conditions for a convincing five-shot victory.
Signed with Vanderbilt, the 17-year-old high school senior from Pinehurst, N.C., carded rounds of 69-68-66. Van Paris took a two-shot lead into Sunday’s final 18 holes.
David Ford (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) closed with a 66 to finish runner-up at 8 under in an elite field of junior golfers age 12-19. Gordon Sargent (Birmingham, Ala.) placed third at 7 under and last year’s champion Luke Potter (Encinitas, Calif.) was fourth at 6 under.
Past champions of this tournament, which started in 1987 with Jim Furyk winning, include Tiger Woods (1992), Rickie Fowler (2006) and Jordan Spieth (2011).
