AOC bringing $2M to help Texas recover
New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was traveling to Houston on Friday with more than $2 million to help Texas recover from a week of catastrophic blackouts and water outages.
She and U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Houston, will distribute supplies to organizatons “on the ground providing relief.” Earlier in the week, Ocasio-Cortez sent fundraising appeals to her massive campaign donor network and her nearly 13 million social media followers.
Donations will be split among Houston Food Bank, the Ending Community Homelessness Coalition, The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center, Family Eldercare, Feeding Texas, Corazon Ministries, Central Texas Food Bank, North Texas Food Bank and Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.
Although Ocasio-Cortez represents the Bronx, she has ties to Texas via her work with the National Hispanic Institute, an education program. She spent time traveling between San Antonio and the Texas border working with Latino families before her election to Congress.
