ELIZABETH MORTENSEN 1923-2021

-

On Tuesday, February 16, 2021, Elizabeth (Betty) Kirk Mortensen, loving mother, aunt, grandmother and greatgrandmother passed away peacefully at the age of 94 surrounded by her family.

Betty was born on December 24, 1926 in Indianapolis to John and Margaret Kirk. She grew up in Indianapolis, began her studies at Butler University, and she completed her college degree at the University of Houston years later. Betty taught sewing primarily at Houston Community College for over two decades.

Betty was set up on a blind date with her future husband, Maurice (Mort) Mortensen, and they married on April 22, 1946. The Mortensens moved to Houston after World War II, and they raised two children, Lesa Mortensen Brownstein and Richard (Dick) Mortensen. Their loving marriage spanned 63 years until Mort’s passing in 2009.

Betty had a passion for serving and gathering with family and friends. She served St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in various capacities. Betty sewed special vestments still worn by the priests as well as liturgical banners that are still displayed on the altars and throughout the Church. She volunteered at Charity Guild of Catholic Women and participated in garden club, bridge, and a weekly sewing group. She was a generous and selfless friend and will be remembered for her kindness, grace and joyful resilience. Betty loved the Lord; and while she will be deeply missed, her family is grateful that she is reunited with her loved ones who awaited her in heaven.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, sister, husband, and brother. She is survived by her children, Lesa and Dick, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A small family memorial service will celebrate her life and legacy, and donations would be welcomed in her memory at Charity Guild of Catholic Women, 1203 Lovett Blvd, Houston, TX 77006, or to a charity of your choice.
