HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Gaston Elie, Memorial
Notable: Memorial won its first playoff game in 19 years after taking down Westbury 62-51 in Saturday’s bi-district round. Elie scored 30 points with six assists and six rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field, 44 percent from the 3-point line and 80 percent from the freethrow line. Memorial meets Elkins in the area round at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Coleman Coliseum.
Other nominees Zion Bourgeois, Bush:
The junior scored 15 of his team-high 21 points in the third quarter, including his own 8-0 run, to propel the Broncos to an 83-71 win
over Katy Taylor in the bi-district playoffs.
Elijah Hill, Madison: Madison lost to Angleton in the bi-district playoffs, but Hill finished with 19 points, 25 rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Johnny Salazar, Northside: Salazar’s buzzerbeating shot pushed Northside past Fort Bend Marshall 73-71 in overtime in the bi-district playoffs. Northside is 15-1 on the season.
Robin Whitehead, Atascocita
Whitehead turned in a game-high 30 points for the Lady Eagles in a 63-45 area playoff win over Clear Springs, last year’s regional finalists. The senior, one of three on Atascocita’s team averaging double figures, leads the team in scoring. Atascocita is looking for its third regional quarterfinal appearance since 2018. Atascocita is ranked 24th in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 6A rankings.
Kyndall Hunter, Cypress Creek: The topranked team in the state continues rolling after a 67-29 victory over Cinco Ranch in the area playoffs on Saturday. Hunter, a Texas signee, led the way with 23 points.
Alicia Blanton, Foster: Blanton posted 18 points and 11 rebounds in an area round victory over Barbers Hill on Saturday. Foster is 23-2 and meets Friendswood in the regional quarterfinals.
Amber Williams, Cypress Springs: Williams scored a game-high 24 points in a 54-41 area round victory over Oak Ridge on Saturday, helping Cypress Springs make school history with its first regional quarterfinal berth.
