Man charged in illegal transport of immigrants

- From wire reports

A man landed behind bars for allegedly transporting two immigrants who were in the country without legal permission, according to an arrest affidavit.

Zachary Remington Guillory was arrested and charged with transport, attempt to transport and conspire to transport.

About 6:45 p.m. Feb. 15, a gray Dodge minivan arrived at the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Hebbronville in Jim Hogg County. Authorities identified Guillory during an immigration inspection. Agents said he was avoiding eye contact, answering excitedly and constantly looking in different directions.

Guillory said he was driving from Zapata to Corpus Christi. An agent obtained consent to search the trunk and discovered two people. Both were determined to be immigrants from Mexico and El Salvador.

In a post-arrest interview, Guillory said he did not know of the people in the vehicle and claimed that “they must have crawled” into the trunk at a convenience store, according to court documents.

“He then claimed he may be getting paid $1,500 per person but then recanted that statement,” according to the affidavit.

The two immigrants were held as material witnesses.
