Meals on Wheels needs donations for senior clients

- From staff and wire reports

Meals on Wheels Montgomery County needs food donations for senior citizens after last week’s winter storm knocked out power to the Conroebased nonprofit.

The organization estimates that it lost about $15,000 in refrigerated items and frozen meals that had already been prepared.

“Due to the recent weather conditions, we lost all of the food in our freezers and are in need of shelf-stable foods to provide to our seniors while we wait on replacement food shipments,” Meals on Wheels Montgomery County said in a social media post.

The nonprofit has a generator that is maintained monthly, but the power breaker that was supposed to flip it on had frozen shut.

The organization had prepared bags of food to deliver to clients after the storm, but instead had to spend time cleaning out the food that had gone bad and make a new game plan.
