Storm triggers some tax relief
Homeowners whose property sustained damage because of the winter storm and freezing temperatures last this month are eligible for temporary property tax relief, the Harris County Appraisal District said.
The state tax code allows a property that sustains at least 15 percent damage in a governordeclared disaster area to receive a temporary exemption of a portion of the appraised property value. Buildings and personal property used to produce revenue for a business also are eligible.
Property owners have 105 days after the governor’s Feb. 12 disaster declaration to file for the exemption, which makes the deadline May 28. The application can be found online at hcad.org.
