“Coming 2 America” and “Boogie” are some of the latest movies.

Here are some of the new films being released in theaters or for streaming, rental or purchase this week.

“Boogie”

Chef, restaurate­ur, producer and writer Eddie Huang directs his first film. A young Asian basketball player battles racism and stereotype­s on his way to his goal of playing in the NBA.

Rated R. Opens March 5 throughout Houston.

“Boss Level”

The always reliable Frank Grillo plays a retired special forces officer stuck in a time loop. Mel Gibson, Naomi Watts, Michelle Yeoh and Ken Jeong co-star and Joe Carnahan (“The Grey,” “The A Team”) directs.

Unrated. Begins streaming March 5 on Hulu.

“The Canyonland­s”

Indie horror film in which five winners of a rafting trip in the remotest part of Utah find they aren’t the only ones out there. Unrated. Opens March 5 at Studio Movie Grill Pearland.

“Chaos Walking”

The action is nonstop in the latest film from Doug Liman (“Edge of Tomorrow”). Tom Holland stars as a young man raised on a planet, inhabited by a hostile race, where he believes all the women have been exterminat­ed while the men have the power to read each other’s deepest thoughts. Based on the first part of the “Chaos Walking” trilogy of sci-fi novels, it also has an all-star cast: Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, David Oyelowo, Daisy Ridley, Mads Mikkelsen and Demián Bichir.

Rated PG-13. Opens March 5 throughout Houston.

“Coming 2 America”

Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall are back for this long-awaited sequel to the 1988 comedy hit. Craig Brewer (“Hustle and Flow,” “Dolemite Is My Name”) directs.

Rated PG-13. Begins streaming March 5 through Amazon Prime.

“The Devil Below”

There’s something going on in Appalachia with the undergroun­d coal mines that have been on fire for decades. The cause may have nothing to do with energy production in this horror-thriller starring Will Patton. It’s the second film to be directed by visual-effects guy Bradley Parker (“Ad Astra,”

“Press Play”). Unrated. Begins streaming March 5 on various platforms.

“Dogwashers”

Colombian drama about a gang of low-level drug dealers. Unrated. Begins streaming March 5 on Netflix.

“Houston French Film Festival”

Ten new films from France are being shown in this annual spotlight.

Unrated. Streams through March 28 at mfah.org/virtualcin­ema.

“My Salinger Year”

Margaret Qualley and Sigourney Weaver star in this Canadian

drama in which a young woman takes a job for a literary agent who represents the reclusive J.D. Salinger. Unrated. Opens March 5 at iPic Houston; Star Cinema Grill Richmond; Star Cinema Grill Spring.

“No Matarás (Cross the Line)”

Spanish thriller about what happens after a man kills someone in an act of selfdefens­e.

Unrated. Begins streaming March 5 on HBO Max.

“Persona: The Dark Truth Behind Personalit­y Tests”

Documentar­y looks at how the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator personalit­y tests are misused and may do more harm than good.

Unrated. Streaming on HBO Max.

“Pixie”

Barnaby Thompson’s Irelandset, darkly humored gangster tale is infectious­ly entertaini­ng and features a memorable central performanc­e from Olivia Cooke.

“Raya and the Last Dragon”

Disney’s first animated Southeast Asian heroine has to save the world.

Rated PG. Opens March 5 throughout Houston; begins streaming March 5 as a premium VOD on Disney+.

“The Sponge Bob Movie: Sponge on the Run”

SpongeBob and his pal Patrick head to the Lost City of Atlantic City to look for his pet snail, who has been kidnapped. Rated PG. Begins streaming March 5 on Paramount + and through VOD platforms.

“Underplaye­d”

The dance floor is not as equitable as dance music’s most ardent defenders declare. That’s the point of this documentar­y, which looks at issues of gender, racial and sexual equality in dance music. Unrated. Begins streaming March 8 at Amazon Prime.

“Yuvam”

Malayalam-language drama from India that centers on three not very successful lawyers who decide to fight against what they see as a social evil. Unrated. Opens March 5 at AMC First Colony 24, Sugar Land.
