Jones captures Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — Matt Jones won the Honda Classic by five shots Sunday, a final round of 2-under 68 good enough to finish the week at 12-under 268 at PGA National. The margin matched the largest in tournament history, tying the mark set by Jack Nicklaus in 1977 and matched by Camilo Villegas in 2010.

The 40-year-old Australian earned $1.26 million and an invitation to the Masters.

Brandon Hagy (66) finished 7 under and alone in second on his 30th birthday, his chance at winning doomed by a third-round 76. Chase Seiffert (64), Brendan Steele (65), C.T. Pan (70), Denny McCarthy (67) and Russell Henley (68) tied for third at 6 under.

COLLEGE BASEBALL Kettler, Baylor defeat Texas

Baylor used a quality start from fifth-year senior Hayden Kettler and a six-spot in the seventh inning to defeat No. 10 Texas 11-2 at Baylor Ballpark.

Kettler (2-0) was stellar on the mound after going seven innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out six. In other action:

• Oklahoma scored five two-out runs in the fifth inning to down Houston, 12-2 and complete a threegame sweep at Norman, Okla.

Lamar parts ways with men’s coach

Tic Price will not return as Lamar University head men’s basketball coach Director of Athletics Marco Born announced Sunday afternoon.

The Cardinals were 10-18 (.357) overall this season. In other news:

• UNLV announced it has promoted Kevin Kruger to head coach, replacing T.J. Otzelberge­r, who left to become the head coach at Iowa State.

PRO BASEBALL Royals’ Perez gets record pact

The Kansas City Royals have given six-time All-Star catcher Salvador Perez the richest contract in club history, a four-year, $82 million deal that begins in 2022.

The deal ties Perez to the only organizati­on for which he’s played until at least 2025.

PRO FOOTBALL Jackson signs with Rams

Veteran receiver DeSean Jackson has signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams, returning to his native Southern California after 13 NFL seasons on the East Coast.

The speedy wideout had the best season of his career in 2013 with 82 catches for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns for the Eagles, and he followed it with two 1,000-yard seasons for Washington. Jackson also spent two seasons with Tampa Bay before rejoining Philadelph­ia in 2019.

• The New York Jets reached an agreement with former New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins ona two-year deal, worth up to $17 million, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal.
