Esa-Pekka Salonen makes Houston debut.

1. Esa-Pekka Salonen

Famed San Francisco Symphony music director Esa-Pekka Salonen makes his debut with the Houston Symphony this weekend. He will conduct the orchestra through a program that includes music by Johann Sebastian Bach arranged for small orchestra by Otto Klemperer, Anton Webern and Luciano Berio. Concertmas­ter Yoonshin Song will perform Bach’s Prelude from Violin Partita No. 3. And the symphony will close the program with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1.

When: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2:30 p.m. Sunday

2. ‘Time No Longer’

The Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern hosts a stirring audio/visual installati­on by Albanian artist Anri Sala. “Time No Longer” casts the image of a CGI-generated turntable on holographi­c gauze 22 feet high and 122 feet long, set to a newly conceived arrangemen­t of composer Olivier Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time,” written when Messiaen was a prisoner of war 80 years ago.

When: Through Dec. 12.

3. ‘Tab-stone setting: Intro into jewelry-making’

Calling all aspiring jewelers. Houston Center for Contempora­ry Craft instructor Tarina Frank leads a virtual workshop on the basics of jewelry design, including how to saw metal settings and tab set a sizable cabochon stone. Don’t worry — no soldering tools are required for class, though Jemco Jeweler’s Supply has a $75 preassembl­ed kit with all the necessary materials.

4. Laura Corley Burlton

Multicultu­ral Education and Counseling through the Arts describes Laura Corley Burlton’s work as “invoking fairy tales, surreal scenes and dreamscape­s”

through use of costumes, masks, dramatic lighting and a captivatin­g mix of antiquated and modern photograph­ic technique. The American artist and photograph­er delights in whimsy, darkness and mystery on her own terms. This week, the Talento Bilingue de Houston invites viewers to step into Burlton’s world during an artist’s reception.
