UT’s Melendez extends record home run streak

AUSTIN — Ivan Melendez hit a pair of two-run home runs to lead No. 4 Texas to a 9-2 win over Kansas State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon.

Melendez has homered in a program-record six consecutiv­e games, with seven total home runs over that stretch.

Kolby Kubichek (4-2) earned the win after pitching a career-high seven innings, allowing seven hits, one walk, one unearned run and striking out five.

Mike Antico contribute­d a two-run homer for Texas (25-8, 10-2 Big 12). In other action:

• Owen Diodati homered and drove in three runs as Alabama defeated Texas A&M 7-4 at College Station for a sweep of the threegame series.

Zane Denton went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in for Alabama (19-12, 5-7 SEC).

Ty Coleman hit his fourth homer of the season and Will Frizzell extended his hitting streak to 11 games for the Aggies (19-15, 3-9), who have dropped six in a row.

• Derek Shaver hit a grand slam and host Wichita State routed Houston 13-2 to complete a sweep of the four-game set.

Adam Becker (1-for-3) hit his first college home run for Houston (13-18, 1-7 AAC), clubbing a two-run shot to left in the fourth.

• Ben Hampton improved to 3-0 with 6 2⁄3 strong innings and West Virginia overcame a threerun deficit to beat Baylor 8-4 at Waco.

Jared McKenzie doubled twice for the Bears (21-11, 3-6 Big 12), who finished

8-1 on the homestand.

• Jace Jung hit three home runs, tying for the NCAA Division I lead this season with 15, and No. 10 Texas Tech beat No. 9 TCU 17-7 at Lubbock.

Cabrera placed on injured list

Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left biceps strain.

Cabrera, who is closing in on 500 career home runs, played first base in Saturday’s 11-3 loss to the Indians. Manager A.J. Hinch said Cabrera felt his biceps “grab” during an at-bat Saturday.

In other news:

• Los Angeles Angels outfielder Dexter Fowler has a torn ACL in his left knee that requires seasonendi­ng surgery.

Recovery time is expected to be six to nine months.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL McClung enters draft, portal

Texas Tech junior guard

Mac McClung intends to go through the NBA draft process while the team’s leading scorer from last season also has his name in the NCAA transfer portal.

McClung led the Red Raiders in scoring, finishing eighth in the Big 12 at 15.5 points per game.

Tennessee State hires George

Eddie George, a former Tennessee Titans star running back, reportedly has been named football coach at Tennessee State, the Tennessean reported.

George, 47, was a fourtime Pro Bowl player over eight seasons with the Titans from 1996 through 2003. He spent his last season, in 2004, with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Houston Oilers drafted George, the 1995 Heisman Trophy winner out of Ohio State, in the first round, 14th overall, in 1996.

In 141 games, he rushed for 10,441 yards and scored 68 touchdowns.
