BELTON — The Woodlands met its match in the Class 6A state semifinals at Tiger Stadium on Tuesday.

The No. 1-ranked Highlanders saw their season end with a 4-0 loss to No. 2 Flower Mound.

The Jaguars (22-1-2) will play No. 4 Austin Vandegrift (20-3-2) for the state championship at 6 p.m. Friday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.

“(Flower Mound) is really good,” The Woodlands coach Dina Graves said. “They just control the midfield, and just being able to keep them at bay enough for you to get forward is difficult. I told the girls sometimes you just get beat by a good team. We’re a good team, too, and that’s just the way it goes.”

The Woodlands (22-2) had won 19 consecutive games and allowed just 13 goals this season. The Highlanders were in the state tournament for the third time in program history, joining the 2009 and 2010 teams.

“You couldn’t have asked for them to do any more than they did,” Graves said. “It’s just the way it goes sometimes. It’s difficult for the seniors, but this group of seniors’ legacy is getting us here, and that helps for the next few years, to really ride on that. The younger kids have that experience to move forward. It’s exciting for them.”

VANDEGRIFT 3 MEMORIAL 0
