NCAA set to change its rule on transfers

The NCAA is poised to make a monumental change to its transfer rules.

The Division I Council meets Wednesday and Thursday, and the agenda includes voting on a proposal that would grant all college athletes the ability to transfer one time as undergradu­ates without asking for special permission or having to sit out a season.

The proposal is expected to pass.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL Four commit to Longhorns

Redshirt junior guard Andrew Jones confirmed Tuesday that he planned to stay at Texas. He led the team last season with 14.6 points per game and was third in assists (2.3) and fourth in rebounding (4.5). The news came hours after senior guard Jase Febres announced Monday night that he plans to “run it back” with the Longhorns next season.

Later Tuesday, Texas also landed two coveted transfers in Timmy Allen (Utah) and Devin Askew (Kentucky) to give new coach Chris Beard six players confirmed for the 2021-22 season.

Allen, a 6-foot-6 small forward, made the 2019 Pac-12 all-freshman team, 2020 All-Pac-12 second team and 2021 All-Pac-12 first team. This past season he led the Utes in points (17.2), rebounds (6.4) and steals (1.3) per game and was second in assists (3.9).

The 6-3 Askew averaged 6.5 points and 2.9 assists last season as a freshman for the Wildcats. Before

that, he starred at Mater Dei in Santa Ana, Calif., and was the No. 7 point guard and No. 37 prospect in the 2020 recruiting cycle, per the 247Sports composite rankings. In other news:

• A former student is suing the University of Evansville and former basketball coach Walter McCarty, accusing the ex-NBA player of rape and the school of not protecting students from him, allegation­s both deny.

• Junior point guard Marcus Zegarowski, who led Creighton last season with 15.8 points per game, declared for the NBA draft.

• Guard Caleb Grill said he’ll transfer back to Iowa State after playing last season at UNLV for new Cyclones coach T.J. Otzelberge­r.

Klein Oak gives nod to Carpenter

Klein Oak announced the promotion of offensive coordinato­r Brandon Carpenter to head coach. He takes over for Jason Glenn, who was promoted to Klein ISD director of student outreach after four seasons at the helm.

The Panthers posted back-to-back 10-3 seasons under Glenn in 2018 and 2019. Klein Oak finished 4-5 this past season but still advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

3 teams’ players to skip workouts

Players with the Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that they’re shunning in-person voluntary offseason workouts because of COVID-19.

Players on other teams are expected to follow suit. In other news:

• The Arizona Cardinals signed running back James Conner to a oneyear contract to replace Kenyan Drake, who left for the Las Vegas Raiders.

• Washington signed 6-5, 270-pound former Tulane basketball player Sammis Reyes of Chile as a tight end.

• Former Bengals running back Giovani Bernard agreed to a one-year contract with the Bucs.

U.S. women blank France in friendly

Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan scored as the U.S. women’s team beat France 2-0 in an exhibition, extending its unbeaten streak to 39 games.
