Phillies hold on to beat Brewers

-

PHILADELPHIA — Vince Velasquez threw six sharp innings, J.T. Realmuto hit a two-run homer and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 Monday night.

Velasquez (1-0) allowed one run and four hits, striking out six in his longest outing this season. Hector Neris struck out Lorenzo Cain with the bases loaded in the ninth to preserve the win. Neris’ five-out save included 36 pitches in the ninth.

Brewers starter Adrian Houser (2-3) gave up four runs — two earned — and four hits in six innings.

CARDINALS 6, METS 5: Nolan Arenado and Harrison Bader homered, Adam Wainwright hung tough and St. Louis beat visting New York for its fifth straight win.

Wainwright (1-3), activated from the COVID-19 list to make the start, fell behind 5-2 in the third inning. But he didn’t give up any more runs before leaving with two outs in the sixth, and the bullpen preserved his first win of the season.

After the game, the Mets fired hitting coach Chili Davis and assistant hitting coach Tom Slater.

New York has struggled badly with runners in scoring position early this season, a trouble spot last year as well when the popular Davis worked remotely because of coronavirus concerns.

PADRES 2, PIRATES 0: Wil Myers singled with no outs in the seventh inning to end Tyler Anderson’s no-hit bid as host San Diego handed Pittsburgh its fifth straight loss.

Anderson (2-3) kept the Padres off-balance for six innings before they broke through in the seventh. Anderson issued a leadoff walk to Manny Machado before Myers singled to right field. A sacrifice fly scored one run and Austin Nola added an RBI single for the Padres, who had just three hits.

A’S 5, BLUE JAYS 4: Ramon Laureano homered for the third consecutive day and Oakland beat Toronto to spoil Marcus Semien’s return to the Coliseum.

Stephen Piscotty also went deep for Oakland. Jed Lowrie doubled twice and had three hits.

Semien went 1 for 3 with a walk in his first game back in Oakland after signing with Toront.

INDIANS 8, ROYALS 6: Eddie Rosario watched as plate umpire Dan Bellino called a ball what could easily have been an inning-ending strike three, then swatted the next pitch into the stands for a tiebreaking three-run homer that sent Cleveland to a win at Kansas City. Josh Naylor added a two-run shot off Royals reliever Jakob Junis (1-2) two batters later.

TWINS 6, RANGERS 5: Kenta Maeda kept Texas scoreless into the sixth inning, and host Minnesota won the opener of a four-game series.

Maeda (2-2) had a season-high eight strikeouts in 5 ⁄3

1 innings, allowing only two singles and two walks in what was by far the best of his six starts this season.

RAYS 7, ANGELS 3: Manuel Margot singled in a run during Tampa Bay’s four-run third inning and added a two-run homer for insurance in the ninth in a victory over host Los Angeles.

ORIOLES 5, MARINERS 3: Cedric Mullins and Freddy Galvis each hit two-run homers in a five-run eighth inning as Baltimore rallied to win at Seattle.
