Arrest made as police try to sort out Man U violence

Police made their first arrest as they worked with Manchester United to identify the fans involved in violence at Old Trafford during protests that forced the postponeme­nt of Sunday’s game against Liverpool.

The unrest against United’s owners saw glass bottles thrown, leading to six police officers being injured, with one receiving a fractured eye socket and another wounded on his face.

W. Columbia’s Ward wins award

Incarnate Word quarterbac­k Cameron War d,a West Columbia native, won the Jerry Rice Award on Monday. The accolade named after the Hall of Fame wide receiver goes to the top freshman player in the NCAA's Division I Football Championsh­ip Subdivisio­n.

During Incarnate Word's six-game spring season, Ward set the school's single-season touchdown passes record with 24, also leading FCS. His season included a pair of six-TD games in consecutiv­e weeks against Southeaste­rn Louisiana and Nicholls. Ward also ranked second nationally in passing yards (2,260), completion­s (183) and total touchdowns (26), and third in pass attempts (303) and passing yards per game (376.7).

Ward beat out South Dakota State quarterbac­k Mark Gronowski for the honor.

Puerto Rican charged in killing

Puerto Rican boxer Flix Verdejo was denied bail after being charged a day earlier with killing a woman who was thrown off a bridge and shot after revealing she was expecting his child.

The case has shocked the U.S. territory and sparked protests against domestic violence.

The lightweigh­t, who represente­d Puerto Rico in the 2012 Olympics, turned himself in after authoritie­s and was charged with kidnapping and carjacking resulting in death and intentiona­lly killing an unborn child.
