Boys

Kyler Mentzel, Alvin

Notable: Mentzel helped the Yellowjack­ets wrap up the District 23-6A baseball title with two victories over Alief Elsik. Mentzel was 4-for-4 with a double and five RBIs in one game and 3-for-4 with two triples in the other.

What coach George Banda said: “Kyler did a good job at the plate making adjustment­s hitting the ball where the ball was pitched. He came up in key positions, capitalizi­ng on situations.”

Other nominees

Ben Shearer, TWCA: Shearer won the 3,200(9:10.69), 1,600- (4:13.29) and 800-meter (1:55.85) runs to help the Warriors earn a third-place finish at the TAPPS Class 5A state track and field championsh­ips.

Wilson Woodcox, Lamar: Woodcox needed just 80 pitches during his one-hit shutout of Westside in a District 18-6A game. He finished with eight strikeouts and did not issue a walk for the playoff-bound Texans.

Dominic Padilla, Jersey Village: Padilla had two standout performanc­es at the plate for the playoff-bound Falcons during wins over Cypress Creek, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored in one and 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the other.

Girls

Ava Brown, Lake Creek

Notable: Brown tossed a 20-strikeout perfect game as the Lions defeated Magnolia 15-0 in Game 2 of the Region III-5A bi-district playoffs Friday night. Lake Creek, ranked No. 3 in the state by the TGCA, advanced to the area round with the victory and improved to 34-0 this season.

What coach Michelle Rochinski said: “Ava was phenomenal. She had everything working and pitched very smart to every batter. She got stronger as the game went on.”

Other nominees

Cameryn Harrison, Katy: Harrison helped the Lady Tigers sweep Fort Bend Austin in the Region III-6A bi-district softball playoffs. She pitched a 14-strikeout no-hitter in Game 1 and tossed two scoreless innings and hit a grand slam in Game 2.

Katie Lott, Cypress Woods: Lott hit a walk-off solo home run to give Cypress Woods a 4-3 victory and series sweep of Klein Oak in the Region II-6A bi-district softball playoffs. She had three hits total in Game 2.

Leah Klenke, St. Agnes: Klenke captured the 3,200- (11:02.58), 1,600(4:55.90) and 800-meter runs (2:15.64) to help the Lady Tigers easily win the TAPPS Class 6A track and field championsh­ip.
