Gatsby’s Prime Steakhouse
A high-end Texas steakhouse with European-style-restaurant aspirations. The project is led by Houston entrepreneur Luis Rangel, who has recruited chef Erick Anaya, with two decades of steakhouse experience, and general manager Luis Rodriguez, formerly with Mastro’s Steakhouse, Truluck’s and Morton’s.
THE SPACE
Houston diners will recognize the address as the shortlived B.B. Lemon Montrose, and before that the home of Pax Americana. The dimly lit space has been redesigned with red leather booths, chandeliers and marbled black and gold décor with a jewel-box bar.
THE FOOD
Starters include shrimp cocktail, campechana, beef tartare, crab cakes, foie gras, caviar service and raw bar options (oysters, crab legs, shrimp, lobster and a seafood tower). The Prime beef menu offers porterhouse steak, bone-in New York steak, tomahawk ribeye, New York strip and wagyu filet. If you’re more surf than turf there’s steamed crab, ahi tuna, salmon and twin lobster tails.
THE DRINKS
A fair number of bottle options of California cabs and Oregon and California pinot noir are priced between $25 and $135. Wines by the glass and cocktails (the signature Great Gatsby is made with Wheatley Vodka, Lillet and grapefruit juice) fill out the menu
THE WORD
“All my experiences eating at fine dining steakhouses allowed me to see what some were missing and that inspired me to open Gatsby’s,” Rangel said.
ONE MORE THING
Rangel also holds the lease on the adjacent space at 4321 Montrose, formerly Bar Victor, where he plans to open a lounge called Daisy Buchanan this month.
