U.S. holds off Haiti in Gold Cup opener

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Sam Vines scored his first internatio­nal goal on a header in the eighth minute, and a U.S. team mostly of backup players opened the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 1-0 victory over Haiti on Sunday night.

Shaq Moore’s cross bounced off two Haitans to Gyasi Zardes, who popped up the ball for Vines to head past goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre from 6 yards.

TOUR DE FRANCE American Kuss takes 15th stage

American rider Sepp Kuss won the grueling 15th stage of the Tour de France while overall race leader Tadej Pogacar remained on course for his second overall victory at Andorra La Vella, Andorra.

The 26-year-old made his move late in the punishing 118-mile ride from the foothills of the Pyrenees to Andorra.

PRO BASKETBALL Magic hire Mavs’ Mosley as coach

Jamahl Mosley has agreed to become the new coach of the Orlando Magic, the team announced, giving the longtime NBA assistant his first chance at running his own club.

The 42-year-old Mosley has spent the last 15 years as an assistant in Denver, Cleveland and Dallas. In other news:

• Epiphanny Prince scored 15 points and the Seattle Storm outlast the Phoenix Mercury 82-75 at Everett, Wash.

• A’ja Wilson had 22 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists to help the Las Vegas Aces beat the Dallas Wings 95-79 at Arlington.

• Teaira McCowan had 21 points and 14 rebounds to help the Indiana Fever defeat the Atlanta Dream 79-68 at College Park, Ga.

• Jonquel Jones had 17 points, 17 rebounds and five assists as the Connecticu­t Sun routed the host New York Liberty 71-54.

• Napheesa Collier matched her career-high with 27 points and the Minnesota Lynx won their seventh straight with an 86-61 win over the Sparks at Los Angeles.
