Sheriff ’s deputy shot in hand during scuffle

A Harris County sheriff’s deputy was shot in the hand inside Ben Taub Tower in the Texas Medical Center, according to Houston police. The suspect was detained, and the deputy’s wound was not life threatening.

The deputy was taking a jail inmate to the tower for an outpatient visit when “an altercation occurred in the restroom area,” said Bryan McLeod, a spokesman for Harris Health System, the county agency that runs Ben Taub.

At some point, the inmate grabbed the deputy’s weapon, and the gun discharged, he said.
