Christmas in July at The Buckingham supports local seniors in need
The 90-degree summer heat may be at odds with the holiday-themed decorations around The Buckingham senior living community, but it’s all part of their Christmas in July fundraiser to support local seniors in need.
With the Beach Boys’ Christmas album setting the ambience, classic Christmas decorations mixed with a tropical flair adorn trees and hallways — flamingos with Santa hats, garlands made of leis, starfish ornaments, and even Santa in a hula skirt. A shopping event, fun games, themed cocktails, and a canned-food drive for the Houston Food Bank rounded out the festivities, with all monetary donations going to local nonprofit Senior Rides and More.
“We want to be part of the community and support local seniors who may be less fortunate,” said Shannon Schmidt, The Buckingham’s director of life enrichment, adding Senior Rides and More helps older adults obtain free transportation services. “This also allows us to clean out our pantries and get ready for the holiday season.”
