Blaker Baker threw three touchdowns, and the Cypress Ranch defense held Cy-Fair to a single score, but Thursday night’s nondistrict game at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium was canceled with 4:23 left in the first half after an hour-long lightning delay.

It was the second lightning delay of the game.

According to Cy-Fair ISD, campus and district officials canceled the game after assessing the situation with lightning in the area and the time of day with school pending.

Once foes in the old District 17-6A, Cypress Ranch and Cy-Fair met for the second consecutive season in non-district.

Cy-Fair is looking to claim its third straight district title under coach Jeff Miller, while Cy Ranch is chasing its first since 2018 under Sean McAuliffe. The Bobcats won 13-10 a year ago; the Mustangs last won 27-14 in 2016.

The Bobcats turned it over on downs near the 50yard line after going for it on fourth down on their first drive, only to see the Mustangs score on the ensuring play on a 56-yard pass from Baker to Jarred Sample.

Landon Arrington’s 33yard gain put Cy-Fair in enemy territory, but the Bobcats came up empty after missing a 34-yard field goal.

Kameron Burton’s 37yard run quickly put Cy Ranch in scoring position, putting the Mustangs over 100 offensive yards. A few rush attempts later, Burton’s 6-yard reception from Baker made it a two-possession game.

Trey Owens’ 60-yard screen pass to Gage McMahon put the Bobcats on the board, 14-7, with 1:34 left in the opening quarter.

The Mustangs had more than 200 yards of total offense, including 88 rushing yards, entering the second quarter after only 14 plays. Sample’s second TD reception, a 27-yard pass from Baker, made it 21-7 three plays into the quarter.

Cy-Fair wasn’t far behind at 183 yards of offensive in the second quarter, with Owens finishing 6 for 11 for 123 yards and a TD, but it was Baker who finished 8 of 9 for 148 yards and three TD passes, with Sample hauling in four catches for 106 yards and two TDs.
