SR. GERALDINE DOHERTY, CCVI

1932-2021

-

Sr. Geraldine Doherty, CCVI, a Sister of Charity of the Incarnate Word, came to the end of her life on earth on August 30, 2021 at 12:36 p.m. May she now enjoy the full presence of God in heaven whom she loved and served during her life among us.

Sr. Geraldine was born Margaret Doherty, daughter of James and Margaret Doherty in 1932 in Ballyhillion, Malin Head, Co. Donegal, Ireland. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston, TX on July 20, 1950 at St. Michael Convent, Carrigoran, Ireland. On June 6, 1951 she began her preparation in the Novitiate for the consecrated life at Villa de Matel, 6510 Lawndale St., Houston, TX. On June 6, 1953, she made her first profession of vows to God and was finally professed on August 15, 1958.

Her first mission was at St. Ann Orphanage in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she cared for the children. Professional studies occurred at St. Joseph School of Nursing in Houston, TX, where Sr. Geraldine earned her registered nurse license. Sister served as a registered nurse in many of the Congregation’s institutions, namely: St. Mary’s Hospital, Galveston, TX; St. Michael Hospital, Texarkana, TX; St. Patrick Hospital, Lake Charles, LA; and St. Joseph Hospital, Houston, TX.

Sr. Geraldine retired from active ministry to Marian Convent in 1993. She became Sacristan at St. Anne Convent, where she faithfully prepared for the Liturgy every day for many years.

In 2003, Sr. Geraldine moved to St. Placidus Convent where she spent her last years in prayer ministry. Sister’s love of God and care for those she served is strong witness to her Christian dedication to the call she received from God during her lifetime. We have been enriched by her presence and will miss her deeply. May she rest in the peace of the Risen Lord.

Sr. Geraldine is survived by one brother, John J. Doherty, of England.

To the Sisters and Staff of St. Placidus Convent and to all who assisted Sr. Geraldine during her last years, we extend a very special thank you.

Sister’s body will be received privately at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Villa de Matel, 6510 Lawndale St., Houston, TX at 5:00 p.m. on September 1, 2021, followed by Evening Praise and a celebration of her life. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Villa de Matel, at 10:30 a.m. on September 2, 2021. A private Rite of Committal will follow at Villa de Matel Cemetery.
