Atascocita suffered its first loss of the season Friday night, a 4635 decision to Denton Guyer in a nondistrict game at Apogee Stadium on the University of North Texas campus.

Atascocita, ranked fifth in the Dave Campbell’s Texas football rankings, finished 3-1 in a tough nondistrict schedule.

“Bottom line tonight is that we didn’t play good enough to win,” Atascocita coach Craig Stump said.

Seventh-ranked Guyer (4-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but Atascocita bounced back in the second half with its offense and defense getting into rhythm.

“They did a few things that we hadn’t seen before on film,” Stump said. “We just had to settle down and little and just play. I think we ran the ball against them throughout the game.”

Atascocita went 15 plays for 80 yards for the Eagles’ first score of the game in the second quarter.

Gavin Session had two big plays with a 15-yard pass to Chase Sowell. Keith Wheeler added a 14yard reception.

Session finished the drive off with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Sowell for the Eagles’ first points of the night.

Atascocita’s defense forced a three-and-out on Guyer’s next possession, and the Eagles embarked on a 12-play drive that covered 56 yards and ended with a Session 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game 14-14 with 3:41 left in the second quarter.

The game remained tied at 1414 heading into the locker room at halftime, but Guyer outscored Atascocita 26-14 in the second half.

Atascocita had 222 yards of rushing as a team but hurt itself with seven penalties for 62 yards. The Eagles also had two turnovers.

Atascocita took the lead after sophomore quarterback Zion Brown threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Kyran Lee to put the Eagles up 28-27 with 6:50 left in the fourth quarter.

Guyer answered right back when quarterback Jackson Arnold threw a 50-yard screen touchdown pass to Grayson O’Bara.

On the ensuing kickoff, Atascocita fumbled the return, and Guyer scored off the turnover. Arnold threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jace Wilson, and the Wildcats never looked back.
