1. MATCH Theater

It’s a busy weekend at MATCH with three production­s opening Oct. 22. They include “Into the Woods,” the Stephen Sondheim classic now set in a library during children’s storytime; “The Revolution­ists,” a comedy about four women during the time of the French Revolution; and Chapman Dance’s “Sanctuary,” an evening of dance combining new works and old.

2. ‘Carmen’

Houston Grand Opera comes roaring back to the live stage by kicking off its new season with the Bizet warhorse, “Carmen.” Former HGO Studio mezzosopra­no Carolyn Sproule tackles the title role. With its well-known melodies and striking set and costume design, “Carmen” is what the phrase “a night at the opera” was made for.

3. ‘Stories from the Stage’

This World Channel’s series is a place to hear diverse voices telling stories of how we live now. The Oct. 25 episode, titled “Resilience,” is set in Houston and features playwright Brendan Bourque-Sheil, Sneha Desai talking about her road from illness to health, and Ebony Stewart learning the secret to conquering stress.

4. ‘Afro-Atlantic Histories’

“Afro-Atlantic Histories” is a fascinatin­g exhibition tracing the African diaspora through the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe between the 16th and 21st centuries. The works being shown create a narrative from numerous smaller cultural ones. The show makes its North American debut this weekend at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
