There’s plenty to get excited about for the 2021 Houston Open golf tournament, which starts Thursday and will be played for the second straight year at Memorial Park Golf Course.

“We’re excited to see this show really happen for the first time at Memorial Park the way we’ve envisioned it for three years,” tournament director Colby Callaway said.

The 74th Houston Open runs Nov. 11-14. The winner receives $1,350,000 of the $7.5 million purse as well as 500 FedExCup points.

Four-time major winner Brooks Koepka is back. The 132-player field includes Shane Lowry, Jason Day, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Reed, Tony Finau, Lee Westwood, Gary Woodland and defending champion Carlos Ortiz.

Richard Dean Wolff builds 2-shot lead at Mayakoba: Matthew Wolff was on the verge of building a big lead Friday at Mayakoba until a pair of late bogeys forced him to settle for a 3-under 68 and a two-shot lead over Scottie Scheffler in the World Wide Technology Championsh­ip at Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Scheffler finished with a par for a 64 and wound up within two shots of the lead.

Sam Houston joining C-USA

Conference USA announced Friday that it will add Sam Houston, Liberty, Jacksonvil­le State and New Mexico State in 2023as the league tries to replenish its ranks after having nine schools announce plans to leave in the last month.

Sam Houston, which won the FCS championsh­ip last season, is part of the WAC football league.
