Festival deaths ruled accidental
The deaths of 10 people during the Astroworld Festival have been deemed accidental after having suffocated when scores of people swarmed together during the chaotic concert, according to medical records.
The festivalgoers — all of whom were under 30 — died from “compression asphyxia” as thousands of people tried to rush the stage and crammed together during a Travis Scott performance, records show. Their autopsies were conducted in the days following the Nov. 5 concert and finalized this week, with asphyxia being determined as the cause of death.
The victims are Mirza Baig, 27; Rodolfo Pena, 23; Madison Dubiski, 23; Bharti Shahani, 22; Franco Patino, 21; Jacob Jurinek, 20; John Hilgert, 14; Axel Acosta, 21; and Brianna Rodriguez, 16.
Shahani and the youngest victim, Ezra Blount, 9, died days later.
Medical examiner records show that Baig had traces of cocaine, methamphetamine and alcohol that contributed to his death.
A lawyer for Shahani said the medical examiner’s findings confirmed her family’s “worst fears.”
“The medical examiner’s findings confirm Bharti’s family’s worst fears,” James Lassiter said in a statement. “Their beloved daughter’s last living moments were surely marked with suffering, panic, and terror. It’s a horrific, inescapable image that no parent should have to endure. But that is the sad reality for the Shahanis and the nine other families that received this terrible news.”
Fallout from the deadly show has prompted a flood of civil litigation from hundreds of attendees, taking aim at concert organizers and Scott himself for failing to keep people safe. Homicide investigators with the Houston Police Department, meanwhile, have been investigating the deaths.
