Boys
David Amador, Jr., North Shore
Notable: Amador caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Kaleb Bailey with 2:53 remaining against Duncanville in the Class 6A Division I state title game Saturday. The Mustangs held on for the 17-10 win, marking their third title in four years.
What offensive coordinator Willie Gaston said: “David Amador is one of our top receivers, and Kaleb Bailey throws that ball very well, so it was just one of those things where we had an opportunity right there to take that shot.”
Other nominees
Kentrell Webb, Sr., Paetow:
Webb recorded eight tackles, including one for loss, and an interception during the Panthers’ 27-24 overtime victory against College Station in the Class 5A Division I state title game Friday. Webb’s pick came with 33 seconds remaining before halftime to keep the Cougars out of the end zone.
Trey Gaston, Soph., Brazos: Gaston had 26 points, nine rebounds and seven steals during a 58-45 victory over Palacios. The guard followed with 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists and five steals during a 66-42 victory over Burton.
Quevon Walley, Sr., La Porte: Walley tallied 23 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals during a 60-45 victory over Friendswood. He then had 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals during a 44-31 win over Baytown Lee.
Girls
Ese Ogbevire, Jr., Fulshear
Notable: The point guard finished with a season-high 31 points on 10-of-20 shooting to go along with eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and one block in a 74-33 district victory over Willowridge. Ogbevire is averaging 18 points per game for Fulshear, 13-5 overall and 6-1 in district play.
What coach D’Shanna Brown: “Ese is a dynamic player who brings a lot of energy on both sides of the ball.”
Other nominees
Jomoriah Ben, Soph., Houston Sterling:
Ben finished with 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting and recorded 12 assists in a victory over Northside.
Rezia Castillo, Fr., Clear Brook: Castillo started out with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting with eight assists and six steals during a 69-23 victory over Clear Lake and followed with 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals during a 52-41 win over Clear Falls.
Chaney Spencer, Fr., Lake Creek: The freshman guard scored 17 points in each game last week, victories over New Caney 50-27 and Dayton 50-26.
