Texas Tech women dominate No. 9 Texas

AUSTIN — Vivian Gray scored 23 points, Bre’Amber Scott had 21, and Texas Tech dominated inside to beat No. 9 Texas 74-61 on Wednesday night.

The Red Raiders (8-5, 1-1 Big 12) shot 50 percent from the field, had an 24-16 edge in the paint and continuall­y went to the free throw line, enabling them to overcome a season-high 26 turnovers.

Tech converted 34 of 44 free throws — Gray was 13-for-17 and Scott 9-for-10 — while Texas hit 12 of 19. The Longhorns made eight straight in the third quarter but missed their last four when the deficit was single digits, helping Tech pull away.

Texas (10-2, 1-1) had its worst shooting game of the season at 29.2 percent.

Emily Ryan scored a careerhigh 22 points with eight assists, Ashley Joens had 17 points and 13 rebounds, and the Cyclones (13-1, 2-0 Big 12) beat the host Sooners (12-2, 1-1) to snap Oklahoma’s nine-game winning streak.

HOUSTON 66, WICHITA STATE 61

Britney Onyeje scored 12 points and had six rebounds, Kamryn Jones added a careerhigh 11 points while Laila Blair also scored 11, and the Cougars defeated the host Shockers in their American Athletic Conference opener to improve to 8-5.

SOUTHERN 89 PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 52

Amani McWain had 24 points to lift the Jaguars to a rout of the visiting Panthers. Diana Rosenthal scored 18 points to lead Prairie View (4-9, 1-1 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference).

TEXAS SOUTHERN 73 GRAMBLING STATE 66

Ataiya Bridges, Shalexxus Aaron and Jala Buster scored 14 points each to lead Texas Southern to its first victory of the season. TSU improved to 1-8 and 1-1 in the Southweste­rn Athletic Conference.

UT-BAYLOR POSTPONED

Saturday’s showdown between No. 9 Texas and No. 14 Baylor in Waco has been postponed because of COVID-19 issues with the Bears’ program. The Bears’ game against TCU scheduled for Wednesday had previously been postponed.

Men TEXAS SOUTHERN 67 GRAMBLING STATE 61

PJ Henry had 16 points as Texas Southern won at Grambling State.

John Walker III had 12 points and eight rebounds for Texas Southern (3-8, 1-1 Southweste­rn Athletic Conference). John Jones added 10 points. Amari McCray had 13 points for Grambling State (3-11, 0-1).

NO. 11 IOWA STATE 51 NO. 25 TEXAS TECH 47

Izaiah Brockingto­n’s fourpoint play with 1:52 left lifted the Cyclones past the visiting Red Raiders in a defensive struggle.

Brockingto­n led Iowa State (13-1, 1-1 Big 12) with 14 points and nine rebounds. Aljaz Kunc added 13 points.

Davion Warren paced Texas Tech (10-3, 0-1) with 12 points.

NO. 10 MICHIGAN STATE 79 NEBRASKA 67

Freshman guard Max Christie scored a season-high 21 points, and Gabe Brown added 14 to help the host Spartans pull away and beat the Cornhusker­s for their eighth victory in a row.

The Spartans (13-2, 4-0 Big Ten) led by just four at halftime because they turned the ball over 12 times. But then Michigan State made three 3-pointers early in the second half to go ahead 47-39 and maintained the lead by taking better care of the basketball, finishing with 19 turnovers.

NO. 15 ALABAMA 83, FLORIDA 70

Jahvon Quinerly and Juwan Gary scored 19 points apiece, and the Crimson Tide opened the second half against the Gators with a 22-4 run on their way to a win in Gainesvill­e, Fla.

Alabama (11-3, 2-0 Southeaste­rn Conference) used the huge spurt to win consecutiv­e games for the first time in a month and notch its first road victory of the season. NO. 18 TENNESSEE 66 MISSISSIPP­I 60 (OT)

Santiago Vescovi scored 17 points, including a critical 3pointer and two big free throws in overtime, as the Volunteers (10-3, 1-1 Southeaste­rn Conference) pulled out a comeback win over the visiting Rebels (8-5, 0-1).
