Stars drop opener to Flames

CALGARY, Alberta — Elias Lindholm scored and Jacob Markstrom recorded his second career playoff shutout as the Calgary Flames beat the Dallas Stars 1-0 Tuesday night in the opening game of their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Lindholm scored a power-play goal early in the first period. Markstrom stopped all 16 shots he faced as Calgary earned just its second playoff win at the Saddledome since 2015.

Dallas goal Jake Oettinger stopped 25 of 26 shots and lost his NHL playoff debut.

Avalanche 7, Predators 2: Nathan MacKinnon and Devon Toews scored 22 seconds apart in a five-goal first period, sending host Colorado to a rout of Nashville in Game 1 of their West firstround playoff series.

Penguins 4, Rangers 3 (3OT): Evgeni Malkin scored on a deflection 5:58 into the third overtime, giving Pittsburgh a win over host New York in Game 1 of their East firstround playoff series.

Capitals 4, Panthers 2: T.J. Oshie scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period, Vitek Vanecek stopped 30 shots and Washington rallied past top-seeded and host Florida in the opener of their East firstround series.

TENNIS Djokovic starts strong at Madrid

Novak Djokovic got off to a good start at the Madrid Open with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gael Monfils in the second round. The top-ranked Djokovic, looking to regain his best form ahead of the French Open, saved all five break points he faced and converted the three he had against the 21stranked Frenchman.

Djokovic, a three-time winner in Madrid, next faces Andy Murray ,a two-time champion in Madrid who continued his latest comeback with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win over Denis Shapovalov.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL Pitt’s Addison set to transfer

Pittsburgh’s Jordan Addison, a rising junior and 2021 Biletnikof­f Award winner as the nation’s top receiver, has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

The decision comes amid reports that Addison, who caught a singleseas­on school record 100 passes for 1,593 yards and 17 touchdowns for the ACC champions last fall, is considerin­g USC as a potential destinatio­n.

‘Momentum’ achieved to dump scholarshi­p

limits: Coaches are pushing for changes to NCAA rules to help stabilize rosters depleted by transfers and support appears to be gaining “momentum.”

The proposal made at the American Football Coaches Associatio­n’s meetings in Scottsdale, Ariz., would lift the yearly cap on how many players a school can sign and create designated windows in which a player must enter the transfer portal and retain immediate eligibilit­y.

Currently a cap limits schools to signing 25 players per year. Those players can be either high school recruits or transfers. The overall scholarshi­p cap of 85 would remain in place.

Drew said the 6-8, 235pound forward had signed a financial-aid contract. Lohner, who starred at Flower Mound in the Dallas area as a freshman and sophomore before going to Wasatch Academy in Utah from 2018-20, averaged 7.0 points and 6.7 rebounds in his 62 games for BYU.

GOLF Hunter leading Mid-Am event

John Hunter carded a 4-under 68 for a threeshot lead after the first round of the Carlton Woods Invitation­al at The Woodlands.

Hunter, a Spring resident who sports two-top 10 finishes in this MidAmateur championsh­ip, made only one bogey on the Nicklaus Course.

Sharing second at 71 heading into Wednesday’s second round of the 54hole stroke play event are Padden Nelson, Jon Lindstrom and Chad Niezing.

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterbac­k Tony Romo opened with a 4-over 76 for a share of 25th place.
