Yelich ties record with third cycle

CINCINNATI — Christian Yelich hit for a recordtyin­g third cycle — all of them against Cincinnati — but the Milwaukee Brewers’ rally fell short in the ninth inning in a 14-11 loss to the Reds on Wednesday.

Tyler Stephenson drove in four runs with a pair of doubles and Colin Moran hit a three-run homer for Cincinnati. The Reds, with the worst record in the majors, won their second straight series.

Yelich became the sixth player in major league history to hit at least one home run, triple, double and single in the same game three times. He joined Trea Turner, Adrian Beltre, Babe Herman, Bob Meusel and John Reilly in accomplish­ing the feat.

Yelich doubled in the first, hit a three-run homer in the third, singled in the fifth and tripled during a six-run ninth. Hunter Renfroe added two solo homers for the Brewers.

Pirates 5, Dodgers 3: Daniel Vogelbach hit a goahead homer in the seventh inning, and host Pittsburgh took a series from Los Angeles for the first time in nearly five years.

Marlins 11, Diamondbac­ks 3: Jacob Stallings hit a go-ahead single in the ninth, Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a three-run homer and Miami used an eight-run final inning to win at Arizona.

Giants 7, Rockies 1: Brandon Crawford homered, leading Alex Cobb and host San Francisco past Colorado for its 10th straight win over the Rockies.

Phillies 4, Mariners 2: Rhys Hoskins homered for the third straight game and provided all of Philadelph­ia’s offense with the second grand slam of his career, and the Phillies beat host Seattle.

Cubs 7, Padres 5: Alfonso Rivas hit a tiebreakin­g two-run single against his hometown team in the eighth inning as Chicago won at San Diego.

Nationals 8, Mets 3: Juan Soto and Nelson Cruz homered as host Washington chased New York starter Tylor Megill in the second inning on its way to a rout.

Rays 4, Angels 2 (10): Vidal Brujan got an RBI double leading off the 10th and Tampa Bay rebounded from its no-hit loss with a win at Los Angeles.

Athletics 9, Tigers 0: Zach Logue pitched seven innings in his second major league start and visiting Oakland spoiled the debut of Detroit’s Joey Wentz.

Braves 5, Red Sox 3: Orlando Arcia hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give host Atlanta a walkoff win over Boston.

Cardinals 10, Orioles 1: Juan Yepez homered and Miles Mikolas pitched seven strong innings, leading host St. Louis to a win over Baltimore.

Royals 8, Rangers 2: Whit Merrifield went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and four runs scored and Kansas City rolled to a victory at Texas.
